A reoccurring motif in his celebrated Popeye series, lobsters figure prominently in a body of work dedicated to its namesake comic book character, who embodies self-acceptance and transcendence. During his major exhibition at Versailles in 2008, Jeff Koons was amazed not only by the decorative and pictorial splendors of the chΓ’teau, but also by the richness of its tableware. On this occasion, he discovered the refinement that the kings of France brought to the rituals of the table, starting with magnificent centerpieces. This encounter sparked Koons's creative mind, always on the alert, to explore with Bernardaud the bold idea of transforming his famous Lobster into an unprecedented table centerpiece that perfectly blends art and functionality.
