Lalique Care Guide
Lalique crystal is a delicate material, sensitive to knocks, friction and changes in temperature. Some pieces carry special finishes, such as luster, patina, gold leaf or a platinum stamp, that scratch especially easily and need a light touch.
Vases, sculptures and decorative pieces
- Clean gently with a chamois or a soft, clean cloth.
- Avoid detergents, solvents and any harsh or abrasive product, and avoid sudden temperature changes.
- Lalique strongly advises against the dishwasher.
- To remove limescale from a vase, fill it with lukewarm water and a little white vinegar for a few minutes. A few grains of rice, swirled gently, help in hard-to-reach spots.
Glasses and decanters
- Wash glasses and decanters by hand in lukewarm water with a soft cloth. Dishwasher detergent, heat and friction dull crystal and weaken it.
- Hold a glass by the bowl, not the stem, and never twist the bowl and stem in opposite directions while drying.
- Don't leave wine in a decanter. Rinse it with lukewarm water right after use and dry it upside down, with absorbent paper in the neck and the stopper off.
- If a whitish film appears inside, add a few handfuls of coarse salt and about two cups of white vinegar, shake gently, then rinse several times with lukewarm water.
- White marks are usually limescale: soak for a few minutes in lukewarm water with a little white vinegar, rinse well and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Jewelry
- Protect pieces from knocks and clean them with a dry or microfiber cloth.
- Don't immerse jewelry in liquid; chlorinated pool water attacks the metal. Keep perfume, hairspray and detergents away from it.
- Store each piece in its own case.
Candles
- On the first lighting, let the wax melt across the whole surface. Trim the wick to 5 mm (about 3/16 inch) before each use, burn for no more than 3 to 4 hours at a time, put the flame out with a snuffer, and let the candle cool before relighting.
