Every Michael Aram metal piece is ground, buffed and polished by hand, so small variations in the finish are part of its character. Care depends on the material, which is listed on each product page.

Metal pieces

  • Nickelplate, silverplate, brass and polished aluminum pieces are not dishwasher safe. Wash by hand with a gentle detergent and dry right away with a soft cloth.
  • Don't soak them, even in plain water, or leave them unwashed overnight.
  • Avoid detergents with lemon or other acids, solvents, ammonia, abrasive cleaners, steel wool and scouring pads.
  • Don't leave reactive foods such as undiluted lemon juice, salt, mayonnaise or egg on metal for long.
  • As with all metals, never put a piece in the microwave.
  • Polished aluminum should not stand in water. Before serving very acidic or salty foods on it, Michael Aram suggests a light wipe of vegetable oil.
  • Dry silverplate before storing it in a silver chest or felt bag, and polish it with a cleaner made for silver plate. Brass may darken slightly over time; this is natural.

Stainless steel and flatware

  • Plain stainless steel is dishwasher safe. Stainless steel combined with goldplate, nickelplate or oxidized brass is hand wash only.
  • Wash flatware before first use, rinse it promptly after meals, load the dishwasher loosely, keep it from touching other metals, and hand dry any water left after the cycle.

Porcelain, ceramics and glass

  • Ceramics and porcelain without gold or platinum are dishwasher and microwave safe.
  • Porcelain with gold or platinum: hand wash with a gentle detergent, dry right away, and keep it out of the microwave.
  • Removable porcelain or glass liners can go in the dishwasher; the metal around them cannot.
  • Glass and non-lead crystal are dishwasher safe; lead crystal is hand wash only. Store glasses upright, not touching.

Marble and stone

  • Natural stone absorbs liquids, so wipe spills promptly. To check whether a piece needs resealing, sprinkle a few drops of water on it: if the stone darkens within about four minutes, it is time to reseal.

Frames, jewelry and candles

  • Frames: wipe with a soft cloth, with no chemical solvents. Loosen the screw with a screwdriver before moving a tab on the back.
  • Fine jewelry: wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth or soak briefly in warm water with a little dish soap, and use a soft brush behind stones. Store pieces separately so they can't scratch each other.
  • Candles: burn within sight, away from anything that can catch fire, and trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each lighting.
