Rosenthal Care Guide
Rosenthal porcelain and bone china are made for everyday use, and almost all collections are dishwasher safe. Each product page shows the care for that piece, so check it for anything decorated.
Dishwasher
- Load pieces so they can't knock against each other; most damage happens while loading and unloading.
- White porcelain is generally dishwasher safe, and so are most decorated collections, because their colors are fused into the glaze at high heat.
- Gold and platinum are not fully scratch resistant. For elaborate gold decoration, use a gentle cycle no hotter than 131°F (55°C), or better still, wash by hand with a mild detergent and a soft sponge.
- A few artistic decorations are hand wash only, as marked on their product page.
Bone china
- Bone china is dishwasher safe. A thin film can build up from food starch, hard water or the wrong amount of detergent; prevent it by dosing detergent, rinse aid and salt correctly and keeping the dishwasher maintained.
- To remove a film, clean the piece now and then with a liquid porcelain or ceramic cooktop cleaner. The glaze itself is not harmed.
Microwave, oven and freezer
- Porcelain without metal trim is microwave safe; pieces with gold or platinum rims are not.
- Rosenthal porcelain is generally ovenproof: put it into a cold oven and let it heat up gradually. Keep it away from open flames and hot burners.
- Porcelain can be frozen, but let it thaw completely before reheating.
Glasses
- Many glasses are dishwasher safe. Use a gentle cycle no hotter than 140°F (60°C) with a mild detergent, and place them so they can't touch.
- Wash glasses with printed decoration, gold or platinum, and lead crystal by hand, one at a time, in lukewarm water with a mild dish soap.
- Dry right away with a soft cloth, without twisting the stem.
