Gien Grands oiseaux
Grands Oiseaux is one of the oldest patterns still made at the Gien faience works. Félix Bracquemond drew these birds in the late 1860s after studying Japanese woodblock prints, at a time when almost no French artist had looked at them, and Gien has kept them in production since 1870. Every plate carries a different bird, which is why collectors build the set piece by piece: a rooster, a heron, a woodcock, geese in flight, a kingfisher, a cockatoo. Because each subject is different, a table set with Grands Oiseaux reads as a small gallery rather than a matched service. Pieces are decorated by hand at the manufactory in the Loire Valley.
Gien Grands oiseaux is French faience by Gien, made in the town of Gien on the Loire since 1821.
