Ercuis Care Guide
Ercuis silver plate, sterling silver and stainless steel are made to be used, and regular use is the best care. Tarnish forms slowly, so pieces in use rarely have time to darken, and they gain silver's soft patina.
Dishwasher
- Ercuis pieces can go in the dishwasher, except the Arts Décoratifs, L'Insolent and Calypso collections. A few pieces, such as some teapots, butter dishes and tea light holders, are marked hand wash only on their product pages.
- Never put sterling silver flatware with mounted handles in the dishwasher; it damages the handles and weakens the fitting.
- Put silver and stainless steel, including knives with steel blades, in separate baskets.
- Use powder detergent only, never liquid or gel.
- Open the door at the end of the cycle to release the steam, and don't leave silver sitting in the machine.
Hand washing
- Don't use bleach, and keep rubber, such as gloves, elastic bands and rubber mats, away from silver; the sulfur in rubber leaves stubborn black marks.
- Dry silver and stainless steel right after washing.
Tarnish and polishing
- Silver slowly turns yellow, then dark, in contact with air, and heat, humidity and seaside air speed this up. The shine can always be restored.
- Use products made for silver: anti-tarnish gloves or a chamois, silver polish on a soft, dry cloth for light tarnish, or silver care cream on a damp sponge for heavier tarnish, then rinse and buff dry.
- Avoid products that contain chlorine or acids.
Storage
- Store silver and stainless steel dry. Separate sterling pieces with a soft cloth to prevent scratches, and keep pieces not on display in anti-tarnish covers.
- Protect knives from sudden temperature changes, which can weaken the joint between blade and handle.
