Which Gien Sologne pieces do I need to serve Thanksgiving?

The Sologne stag serving platter for the turkey, a small oval platter for ham or roasted vegetables, an oblong tray and a pickle dish for stuffing and cranberry sauce, a cake platter for the pie, and an acrylic tray for carrying coffee after dinner.

Thanksgiving is the one meal of the year when the serving pieces matter as much as the plates. The turkey needs a platter, the soup needs a tureen, and the pie needs somewhere beautiful to land. With its warm fall colors and wildlife drawings, Gien's Sologne pattern was practically made for the occasion.

Thanksgiving table set with Gien Sologne plates and a stag serving tray

Sologne is drawn by the artist Estelle Rebottaro and made in French faience at Gien, in the Loire Valley, where the manufactory has worked since 1821. For the plates, mugs and everyday pieces, see our guide to setting a fall table with Sologne; this guide is all about serving the feast.

Thanksgiving Hosting Tips

  • Plan the platters first – lay out every serving piece the night before and label each with a sticky note for the dish it will hold.
  • Warm gently – faience doesn't like sudden temperature changes; rinse a tureen in warm water before filling it with hot soup.
  • Serve family style – passing platters around the table is part of the warmth of the day.
  • Save room on the table – put the carved turkey on the stag platter and leave the rest of the serving on a sideboard.
